Your Brain Is Why You Don't Make the Call (And How to Rewire It)

By Noel Gray, The REALEST Coach. October 2026.

Every agent knows they should be making calls. Most have the time blocked. And most, at some point, sit down at that time and find a reason not to dial.

What will I say if they push back? How do I even start? How do I bring up my business without sounding salesy?

Those questions feel like reasons. They're not a character flaw, and they're not laziness. They're your brain doing exactly what it was designed to do.

Part One

Meet your amygdala

Deep in your brain is a small, almond-shaped structure called the amygdala. Its job is to scan for threats and keep you safe. When it senses danger, it sets off your fight, flight, or freeze response before your thinking brain has time to weigh in.

The problem is that the amygdala can't tell the difference between a bear in the woods and a stranger who might reject you on the phone. Uncertainty and the possibility of rejection register as threats. So when you sit down to call a For Sale By Owner and you don't know how the conversation will go, your brain does what it does best. It reacts out of fear.

Fight looks like getting defensive or pushy on the call. Flight looks like "I'll call after lunch." Freeze looks like staring at the phone, or going blank the second they answer.

Part Two

Fear feeds on the unknown

Notice what all those head trash questions have in common. They're about the unknown. What will I say? How will it go? Your brain fills the blank with the worst case, and the worst case triggers the alarm.

That's why pushing through on willpower alone rarely lasts. You might override the alarm for a day, but if the unknown is still there, the alarm goes off again tomorrow.

Part Three

The good news: your brain can be rewired

Your brain is not fixed. Every time you repeat a thought or an action, you strengthen the neural pathway behind it. Repeat it enough, and it becomes automatic. That's how habits form, and it works in both directions.

If you rehearse the hang up, the awkward pause, and the rejection in your head, you strengthen those pathways and the fear gets more automatic. But if you rehearse the conversation going well, and practice what you'll actually say, you build a new pathway. One where the call feels familiar instead of threatening.

Part Four

Preparation removes the threat

The fastest way to quiet the alarm is to take away the unknown. When you know where the conversation is going, there's less for your amygdala to react to.

That's why I don't teach scripts. Scripts fall apart the second a real person says something unexpected, and that sends you right back into freeze. Instead, I teach conversations built on checkpoints. You know where the call needs to go, so even when the words change, you know your next step.

Part Five

Practice turns it into a habit

Preparation gets you started. Practice makes it stick.

Thinking a conversation through, over and over, begins building the pathway. Practicing it out loud, with a roleplay partner or a tool like my Roleplay Coach, strengthens it. And having real conversations solidifies it. Each repetition makes the next call a little less threatening and a little more natural, until one day you realize you're not talking yourself out of the call anymore. You're just making it.

This week, an agent working through my workbook got bold and sent me a voice message with her questions. She may not realize it yet, but she just started building a cold calling habit. That's what this looks like in real life. One rep at a time.
